What are early signs of ADD and ADHD, and at what age are kids diagnosed?
When a child is diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder , parents often have concerns about which treatment is right for their child. ADHD can be managed with the right treatment. There are many treatment options, and what works best can depend on the individual child and family. To find the best options, it is recommended that parents work closely with others involved in their childs lifehealthcare providers, therapists, teachers, coaches, and other family members. Treatment recommendations for ADHDFor children with ADHD younger than 6 years of age, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parent training in behavior management as the first line of treatment, before medication is tried. For children 6 years of age and older, the recommendations include medication and behavior therapy together parent training in behavior management for children up to age 12 and other types of behavior therapy and training for adolescents. Schools can be part of the treatment as well. AAP recommendations also include adding behavioral classroom intervention and school supports. Additional Problems In Adults With AdhdAs with ADHD in children and teenagers, ADHD in adults can occur alongside several related problems or conditions. One of the most common conditions is depression. Other conditions that adults may have alongside ADHD include:
The behavioural problems associated with ADHD can also cause problems such as difficulties with relationships, social interaction, drugs and crime. Some adults with ADHD find it hard to find and stay in a job. Tips For Parenting A Toddler With AdhdIf your toddler has ADHD, one first step might be setting aside time to learn specific behavior therapy techniques from a qualified therapist. Healthcare professionals recommend behavior therapy as the first treatment young children with ADHD should receive, and experts believe this therapy is most effective when it comes from parents. A few key tips for helping your child manage ADHD include:
The U.S. Department of Education offers specific techniques for teachers that you could also apply at home, making sure you adapt them to your toddlers developmental level. These include:

According to the latest DSM-V guidelines1, in order to be diagnosed with ADHD, a patient must demonstrate at least six of the nine symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity prior to age 12. In addition, these symptoms must impair the persons functioning in more than one setting home, school, or work. While the DSM-V outlines the basics for an ADHD diagnosis, theres much more to an accurate diagnosis. In addition to reviewing these criteria, doctors will conduct a thorough clinical interview using one standardized ADHD rating scale. A screening test is also often administered to rule out common coexisting conditions like learning disorders, anxiety, autism, and mood disorders. Diagnosing an adult is trickier than diagnosing a child. The DSM-V symptom guide is really invalid for adults almost all of its criteria is geared toward diagnosing children. An ADHD diagnosis in adulthood emerges only from a careful clinical interview conducted by a specialist in ADHD who takes his or her time with the evaluation. What Causes Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DisorderThe exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but the condition has been shown to run in families. Research has also identified a number of possible differences in the brains of people with ADHD when compared with those without the condition. Other factors suggested as potentially having a role in ADHD include:
ADHD can occur in people of any intellectual ability, although it’s more common in people with learning difficulties. Children may struggle at school, home and in social situations, and adults may struggle with work, education, interactions with friends and family and more. Untreated ADHD makes life harder than it has to be. Diagnosing Adhd In AdultsADHD often lasts into adulthood. To diagnose ADHD in adults and adolescents age 17 years or older, only 5 symptoms are needed instead of the 6 needed for younger children. Symptoms might look different at older ages. For example, in adults, hyperactivity may appear as extreme restlessness or wearing others out with their activity. Also Check: Is The Actor On Atypical Autistic How Is Adhd Diagnosed In PreschoolersIt is usually hyperactive and impulsive behavior that leads to an ADHD diagnosis in preschoolers. They may have been kicked out of preschool or banned from playdates. Their parents worry constantly that they will run into the street or hurt themselves in some other impulsive way. From 2 to 6 percent of preschoolers are estimated to have the disorder a much lower percentage than school age kids. Boys are twice as likely as girls to be diagnosed. But Dr. Stein, who is also a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the University of Washington, emphasizes that diagnosing ADHD at this age should be done with great care, since all preschool children exhibit some hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention, the key symptoms of ADHD. Observing a childs behavior in the doctors office is not sufficient for a diagnosis, as symptoms may not be present in that environment. Pediatricians are encouraged to collect screening questionnaires filled out not only by a parent but by at least one other adult who spends time with the child. Symptoms must be present in more than one setting ie at home, at preschool or daycare, with relatives or family friends. As Dr. Stein notes, its harder to evaluate children who are not yet in a structured environment like preschool, where their behavior is easier to observe and compare to that of other kids. Since ADHD is a condition youre typically born with, its possible for toddlers to have ADHD even if theyre young. While some children do receive an ADHD diagnosis before theyre 4 years old, this isnt common. The AAP has published guidelines for pediatricians on how to diagnose and treat ADHD in children of preschool age and older. It does not have guidelines geared toward younger children. About 11% of U.S. children 4 to 17 years old are living with symptoms of ADHD. from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest 388,000 children ages 2 to 5 years in the United States have an ADHD diagnosis. But according to some Early signs of ADHD generally include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Here are some examples of how these symptoms may appear in toddlers:
Healthcare professionals diagnose ADHD according to criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . Behavioral Therapy Comes FirstFor preschoolers diagnosed with ADHD, behavioral therapy is the first treatment. This type of treatment involves changes in behavior by parents and teachers. Techniques include praising and rewarding good behavior, ignoring bad behavior, and using time-outs. Structure and routine are important for young kids with ADHD. Don’t Miss: Books About Adhd In Adults Behavioral Treatment For AdhdParent training for behavioral management techniques is the recommended treatment for preschoolers with ADHD. Through these programs, parents learn how to more effectively shape the behavior of young children, and the children usually show marked improvement in their ability to comply with direction and rein in their impulsivity. Why parent training, rather than therapy delivered directly to the child? Dr. Adesman explains that children are often referred for play therapy, but this is not a very helpful intervention for ADHD. At its worst its like an expensive play date. At its best its a well-intentioned intervention that doesnt have any evidence to support it. What families should be pursuing is parent training in behavior management techniques. Intuitively one would think that if the child has the problem, the therapy should be focued on the child. The reality is that, while its the child who has the problem, what we want to do is change the environment so we can set the child up for success. And that typically involves working with parents and teachers, he explains. If a child has allergies the problem is with the child but the solution is in working with the environment. You might get rid of the carpet or the drapes or find a new home for the cat. We can do things with the environment to help kids behave better.
How Does Adhd Affect AdultsMany adults don’t realize that they have ADHD until their children are diagnosed. Then they begin to notice their own symptoms. Adults with ADHD may find it hard to focus, organize, and finish tasks. They often forget things. But they also often are very creative and curious. They love to ask questions and keep learning. Some adults with ADHD learn to manage their lives and find careers that let them use those strengths. At the time of publication, no research could be found that discussed the breakdown of symptoms between trans men, trans women, and gender nonconforming people. Intersex people were also not represented. When Should I See My DoctorIt is normal for children to get restless and distracted from time to time, and to be active and have lots of energy. But if a child has ADHD, their problems with attention and hyperactivity will be severe enough to interfere with learning and social relationships. There are many behavioural and developmental disorders that can cause symptoms of ADHD in young children, so it’s important to have a proper assessment. Other reasons for children being inattentive, impulsive or hyperactive are health or emotional problems, learning difficulties or lack of sleep. If you are concerned that your child may have ADHD, the first step is to see a doctor. The diagnosis can only be made after a detailed assessment of the childs behaviour, including interviews with parents or carers and the school. Treatment may include medicines and behaviour therapy. Parents and other adults need to closely watch children after they begin to take medicines for ADHD. The medicines may cause side effects such as loss of appetite, headaches or stomach aches, tics or twitches, and problems sleeping. Side effects usually get better after a few weeks. If they don’t, the doctor can lower the dose. Therapy focuses on making changes in the environment to improve the child’s behaviour. Often, counselling and extra support at home and at school help children succeed at school and feel better about themselves. How Is Adhd Treated
How is ADHD in children tested and treated?
There are several different options for the treatment of ADHD, depending on the specific needs of each child and family. Treatment may involve different health professionals, including a doctor, psychiatrist, paediatrician, psychologist or family therapist. Parents and possibly schoolteachers too need to be actively involved in the treatment plan. The first step is often to use positive parenting strategies. It can help to stick to a routine, help the child build their social skills and talk to the school to plan an environment where they are able to learn. If the ADHD is still having a big impact on the childs life, it might be time to consider medication. Stimulant medicines can reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity. They help a child to focus and learn. Stimulant medicines have been thoroughly researched for many years and have been shown to be safe and to greatly improve concentration, impulse control and hyperactivity in about 4 in 5 children with ADHD. The doses used to treat ADHD are not addictive and do not cause withdrawal symptoms. However, they can cause side effects like loss of appetite and difficulty falling asleep. For children who may experience side effects from these medicines, non-stimulant medicines are also available. Psychological treatments, such as behavioural therapy, may help a child develop strategies and skills for learning and controlling their behaviour. That makes sense, but before agreeing to treatment, ask how many other cases of ADHD the doctor has treated, and what the plans and outcomes were, says Russell Barkley, Ph.D., a clinical professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. If the doctor has handled only a few cases, you might be better off going to a specialist developmental pediatrician, psychiatrist, or psychologist who has significant experience with ADHD. As a rule, most general practitioners are not trained in the idiosyncrasies of ADHD and its overlapping conditions, or are not equipped to perform the in-depth evaluation needed. One reason is time. It can take several hours of talking, test taking, and analysis to diagnose someone with ADHD. Most general practitioners cant give you or your child that much attention in a busy practice. Regardless of how experienced your is, says Barkley, you should strongly consider a medical specialist if your childs ADHD is accompanied by another diagnosed disorder, such as oppositional behavior, anxiety, or if there are urgent issues involved. Professionals trained in diagnosing ADHD routinely screen for these problems. Your family doctor or health insurer can probably steer you to a qualified ADHD specialist. Is Your Childs Lack Of Interest In Peers A Sign Of Autism
What is High Functioning Autism? | Kati Morton
If your child shows no interest in their peers and does not want to play with others, it could be a sign of autism. Every child develops at a different rate, however. A lack of interest in peers can even out as the child ages. Some children are inherently shy or anxious, or they have limited experience with other kids and therefore can be less interested in peer interactions. If you are concerned about developmental delays or the potential for autism, talk to your childs doctor. Let Go Of Traditional Parenting BeliefsWhen I speak with parents of autistic children, I tell them to burn their traditional parenting books because they are useless. And this is so true. The parenting techniques you likely used with your son or daughter probably wont work with your autistic grandchild. Its a whole new world. A world where punishment escalates problem behavior and positive reinforcement can deescalate it. Its a world where transitions can be challenging, and timers can make all the difference. Sitting around the same table enjoying the same meal may have been how you raised your children, but your autistic grandchild may have food aversions and difficulty sitting in one place for long periods. Embrace what helps your autistic grandchild be successful, as non-traditional as that may be. Avoid Judging Or Blaming Anyone Or AnythingAs humans, too often we find ourselves searching for a reason or something on which we can lay blame. In the larger picture of your grandchilds emotional, physical and intellectual growth, negative energy is simply wasted energy. Positive energy seeks to learn, to understand and to support what is. Autism is a neurological disorder. Parents cannot do anything or fail to do anything that would leave their child autistic. Suggesting otherwise is cruel and utterly wrong. Recommended Reading: Wellbutrin For Adhd Reviews Behavior Signs Of Autism In ChildrenAutistic childrens behavioral signs are typically the most widely known, but sometimes they arent as widely understood. We do have certain behavior signs of autism in children to watch for, but its important to also see where this behavior may come from. Autistic children may have repetitive behaviors like flapping their arms or tapping their feet. These behaviors are called stimming. We stim because it helps us calm down, show our excitement, show that were overwhelmed, and more. You may also notice that your child seems to resist physical contact. Physical stimulation can be extremely overwhelming for autistic children, so often theyre okay with physical contact if they initiate but not when others initiate. Autistic children may also struggle to transition between activities. Our brains can hyperfocus on what were working on, so when were expected to stop that and move to another activity it can lead to meltdowns. Another behavior sign of autism in children is that they may not seem aware of dangers in their environment. You might see your child bolt or run out into the road, seemingly unaware that a car could hit them at any time. Autistic children also may become physically aggressive when frustrated. Its vital to know that autism does not make a child violent, but when an autistic person is frustrated and cannot communicate their needs, they may respond with aggression. And finally, autistic children may often rock or bang their head repeatedly. Interacting With A Child Who Has Autism Spectrum DisorderAutism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder. It affects how children interact and communicate with others. The disorder is called a spectrum disorder because children can be anywhere on the autism spectrum. Children with ASD start to show symptoms at an early age. The symptoms continue during childhood and adulthood. Healthcare providers dont know why some children develop ASD. It may be a combination of genes they are born with and something in their environment that triggers those genes. Children with ASD have trouble relating to other people. They have trouble making eye contact. They often withdraw into themselves. They may seem uninterested in relating to family members. But some children with ASD may love to keep talking with family members, friends, and even strangers about a topic they are obsessed with. The problem is that they may talk about it too long. Or they may talk only about that one subject. This can push other people away. If you are a parent or grandparent of a child with ASD, it can be heartbreaking if you feel like you just canât connect with him or her. But learning more about these disorders and what has helped others can help you and your relationship. Autistic children arent crying, wailing, or flailing to get at us somehow. Their brains are wired differently and so its how they interact with the world. Thats something we have to come to terms with as parents so we can support them in the best way. So how can we effectively support our children through these often loud and thrashing meltdowns? Assume That Most Of Their Identity Is Down To Autism Rather Than Personality ChoicesThe phrase yeah, thats his autism is one I have heard far too many times. Even in professional circles. Yes, our autism influences us. Yes, it often gives us particular habits or interests unique to us. But to say its just his/her autism is implying that we dont get any say in the matter. I remember when I was running a chess tournament in a special school . One crucial match was scheduled for a day when the school was doing a special event. Throughout the day there was only one opportunity for this game to be played and ten minutes before the start, one of the students got a migraine and had to go home. This stressed me out because I was relying on that matchs result so I could drive straight to the trophy centre after work and have the prizes engraved . And Im fairly transparent, so people could tell I was bothered by something. When I told one of my colleagues I was feeling stressed, she immediately asked me oh dear- is it because todays been a break from routine? No, it wasnt. Social Signs Of Autism In ChildrenOne of the biggest autism stereotypes is that were anti-social. But what in the world does that even mean? A lot of autistics I know are very social, we just tend to socialize differently than neurotypical people do. There are definitely some social signs of autism in children that parents can watch for, so Ive outlined a few of them below. First, autistic children may struggle to relate to people outside of their close family. It takes us a while to connect with new people, so were often most ourselves with close family. Autistic children also may not play with other children as you might typically expect. Autistics tend to prefer parallel play where they play near other children without directly interacting. Your child may also seem like they are in their own world a lot of the time. Maybe they dont respond when called or seem to zone out. One of the biggest signs for my son, A-Man, was that he played with the exact same toys in the exact same way every time. He liked his routine and playing in a way he knew that he enjoyed helped him to feel safe and in control. You may also notice that your child prefers to play alone, rather than with peers. Autistic children tend to be very specific in their play, and adding in other children adds a lot of uncontrollable variables. Which brings me to my final social sign of autism Autistic children may have extremely strict rules to follow during play. You May Like: Does Autism Come From The Mother Or Father Dont Use Creative LanguageAutistic children take things literally. If you sprinkle your conversation with irony, sarcasm, exaggerations, or idioms, youre bound to confuse the child. For example, dont tell a child to keep an eye on something. The child may reach for it and put the item near his face. Be as literal and direct as you can, so the child knows exactly what youre talking about. If you slip and say something unusual, dont laugh at the child for taking your words literally. Apologize for your mistake, and rephrase the sentence so your meaning is clear. Communication Signs Of Autism In Children
Autism Now: Meet Nick, Robert MacNeil’s Grandson
We learned about my sons autism after begging our pediatrician for a speech therapy referral. We knew he wasnt communicating like a typical child would, and we wanted to help him communicate to lower his frustrations. See, autistic children often have significant communication struggles and delays, sometimes to the point of not speaking at all. The first thing most people notice in autistic children is that they may not meet typical language milestones. You may notice that your child often repeats quotes from books, songs, or movies that they have seen or heard. My son used to quote the Tinkerbell Pirate Fairy movie constantly. An autistic child may also struggle to begin or keep up with conversations. Beginning a conversation takes several expressive language skills that many autistic kids struggle with, and keeping up with a 2-way conversation can be overwhelming and exhausting. You might also notice that an autistic child may not respond to their name. Sometimes this is because they are so engrossed in an activity that they block out other noises, and sometimes its because autistic children dont develop the same familiarity with their name that other children do. Another common communication sign of autism in children is that they may seem completely unaware of the volume of their own voice. A-Man is often yelling or whispering without realizing that hes doing it, or realizing how those different volumes affect those around him. One thing Ive noticed coaching ADHD adults since 2003 and running The Vancouver Adult ADD Support Group is that many have told me that their doctors or psychiatrists dont properly explain the medications for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, what they can and cant do, what the side effects are and how to deal with those side effects and proper expectations on ADHD medications. A 2016 review by Frank et al identified 41 studies that reported reasons for patient non-adherence to ADHD medication. All studies were published from 19972014 and examined ADHD medication adherence over the long term in children, adolescents or adults. Commonly reported reasons for poor adherence to ADHD medication included: Own wish/remission/dont need Withdrew consent Adverse effects Suboptimal effect . The reasons why children and adolescents stop and restart ADHD medication were also investigated here, using the prospective longitudinal cohort from the Multimodal Treatment of ADHD study in children with ADHD. At the 12-year follow-up, 372 participants reported ever taking ADHD medication, and 286 reported stopping medication for 1 month at some time during childhood or adolescence . Are There Differences Among Adhd DrugsAlthough just a handful of compounds specifically target ADHD, numerous dosage forms exist. The main variable between these is the duration of action- that is, how long the drug works.
Atomoxetine has a 24-hour duration of action. It also differs from stimulants in that it is not a potential drug of abuse and, therefore, not a controlled substance. Selection of an ADHD medication selection depends on patient-specific factors as well as drug side effects, interactions, and existing conditions. However, stimulant medications have more evidence of use and are more effective than non-stimulants. Stimulants have the fastest onset of effect, usually within 1 to 2 hours of an effective dose. If there is a poor response to one stimulant, for instance, methylphenidate, another stimulant such as dextroamphetamine may be tried. Although non-stimulants are less effective than stimulants, they have no potential for abuse. Atomoxetine has a slower onset of effect, about 2 to 4 weeks. However, the full effect may take 6 to 8 weeks to occur. Guanfacine causes more sedation than stimulants and atomoxetine. Its duration of action is 18 hours. According to Autism West Midlands, an autism meltdown is a time of crisis during which a person may show extreme behaviors like shouting, self harm, aggressive behavior, and repetitive behavior that may or may not pose as a risk of harm to the person themselves or to others. These crisis points are triggered by high levels of stress, as well as social and sensory overload. Autistic people are more likely to experience these meltdowns than neurotypical people for a variety of reasons, but a notable finding is that autistics tend to start their day with a higher level of stress and anxiety, leaving them with less room to cope with additional stress . The Impact Of Nutrition On Physical And Mental Health
Diet and Autism
May 17th, 2022Note: This blog was written by Juliette Heim, Autism Resource Specialist, and Kristy Myers, Health Consultant at the Autism Society of North Carolina. Juliette Heims reflections on her experience as a parent to a son with autism are in italics. Health is broadly defined as a state of physical, mental and social well-being, in addition to freedom from disease and/or illness . It includes daily movement, adequate sleep, healthy eating patterns and social connections that result in improved quality of life and reduced risk for chronic diseases. As a parent of a soon to be 22-year-old son, who is on the autism spectrum, I have learned some very important lessons over the years, as to the importance of physical and mental health in relation to nutrition. At the time when Logan was four years old, we discovered that he had some nutritional deficiencies, as well as intolerances related to his digestion and his overall gut health. After doing my own research and consulting with my sons pediatrician, we placed him on a gluten-free and dairy-free diet. For Logan, this has made a world of difference for him. How Do I Eat Healthy On A BudgetA lot of people think they can’t afford healthy food. It is possible to eat healthy on a budget. Finding simple meals with a protein source and some vegetables can be an easy, quick, and cheap meal. Quick tips to save money:
Children With Autism Often Have Strong Food Preferences That Lead To Poor Nutrition You Can Help Your Child Form Good Mealtime Habits With These Guidelines For Healthy EatingHealthy eating in childhood helps to set up good habits for life. This is especially important for children with autism spectrum disorder who have an increased risk for excessive weight gain, selective eating and nutrient deficiencies. Scheduling mealsFruits, veggies and other nutritious foodsThroughout each day, children should eat from all five major food groups, which include:
Each of these food groups provides a different set of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients like carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Its OK if your child only eats a few foods in each food group, as long as those foods are consumed on a daily basis in a balanced way. The United States Department of Agriculture has created the My Plate educational resource to help guide you in balancing your familys diet. Following My Plate also helps you with appropriate portion sizes based on age. What to avoidIt is important to limit snacking between scheduled meals and snacks. Grazing, or eating small amounts of food throughout the day, isnt healthy. At an identified meal or snack time, portion out the correct serving size and put it into an appropriate container, such as small bowl or baggie. Reducing grazing also means limiting access to sugar-sweetened beverages, such as juice and soda. Caloric drinks should only be offered as part of a meal. Limit juice to no more than 8 ounces a day, and avoid soda whenever possible. Additionally, they reported disordered eating behaviours, such a pathological avoidance of foods with a high carbohydrate or sugar content, a desire to be thin, a dissatisfaction with their body, as well as bulimic behaviours and a preoccupation with food, all on severity levels similar, though not quite like those of women with EDs. Research by Dr Gordon Bell at Stirling University has shown that some autistic individuals have an enzymatic defect that removes essential fats from brain cell membranes more quickly than it should10. This means that autistic individuals are likely to need a higher intake of essential fats. It has been found that supplementing EPA, which can slow the activity of the defective enzyme, has clinically improved behaviour, mood, imagination, spontaneous speech, sleep patterns and focus in autistic individuals. There have since been clinical trials testing omega-3 supplementation, which have found that when individuals with autism were given omega-3 supplements, improvements in symptoms such as hyperactivity, social ability, concentration, irritability and aggression were reported 11,12. While most young children exhibit food preferences and some food selectivity, other children display persistent and highly restrictive eating patterns. Almost 70% of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder exhibit selective and restrictive eating patterns. Some childrens food selectivity may be so severe that they only eat one or two foods. Extreme eating patterns can lead to caloric and nutritional deficits, which are especially concerning in young children as growth and brain development may be affected. In addition to the health and developmental effects of persistent restrictive eating patterns, it also causes disruptions to family life and may interfere with the childs daily functioning. Eating only certain foods may affect the social activities that a child participates in. Families may be forced to cook special meals each day or to eat at only certain restaurants, if at all. Planning for school lunches can become challenging as well. Mealtimes are often stressful for the family as there may be disagreements between the adults on how to get the child to eat, along with crying and other avoidant behavior by the child. Children and adults with feeding difficulties may display the following behaviors: Read Also: How To Know If Youre Autistic Vitamin B6 Vitamin C And MagnesiumWe have known since the 1970s that a nutritional approach can help autism, thanks to the pioneering research by Dr Bernard Rimland of the Institute for individual Behaviour Research in San Diego, California. He showed that vitamin B6, C and magnesium supplements significantly improved symptoms in autistic individuals. In one of his early studies back in 1978, 12 out of 16 autistic individuals improved, then regressed when the vitamins were swapped for placebos 14. Other studies, however, have failed to confirm conclusively positive outcomes with certain nutrients. For example, a French study of 60 autistic individuals found they improved significantly on a combination of vitamin B6 and magnesium, but not when either nutrient was supplemented alone16. Why Are Dietitians Recommended For People With AutismAs some people on the autism spectrum can have difficulty with eating, or can be fastidious eaters, there are a number of professional registered dietitians who have a particular interest in the nutritional needs of children and adults with autism. Behavioural challenges as well as sensitivities to certain foods, particularly among some children with autism, can make it difficult for parents and carers to ensure they are providing them with a nutritious diet. For example, people with autism may refuse to eat unless they sit in the same place at the table, eat on the same dishes, use the same tablecloth, and eat the same foods every single day. Just a small change in routine can cause an enormous amount of anxiety or fear in a child or person with autism, and can often result in the refusal to eat. Researchers at Marcus Autism Center at Emory University School of Medicine found that children on the autism spectrum are five times more likely to have mealtime outbursts, be more selective about their food, or have ritualistic eating behaviours. The study also found lower intakes of calcium and protein in children with autism. Calcium is crucial for building strong bones, while adequate protein is important for growth, mental development and health. This can be why people with autism, or with a child who has autism, find it useful to seek advice from a dietitian, as they can provide solutions for evading some of these common issues. Miriam Belsham, principal occupational therapist at Sprouts Child Occupational Therapy Service explains: Eating and drinking is the most complicated sensory task a child engages in. Its the only daily activity for children that requires all eight of our sensory systems to work in coordination. Therefore, its understandable that if a child has challenges with their sensory processing, like in ASDs, this can impact their eating and drinking and mealtime participation. In Karjalainen et al. , BMI was compared between autistic women and women currently ill with AN, with autistic women having a significantly higher BMI than women currently ill with AN. Eating Optimal Foods: Autistic Children & Problems With FoodChildren with autism often have inadequate nutrition, partly due to food avoidances and aversions. Poor nutrition increases the risk of later chronic illnesses, like diabetes and heart disease. Children who grow up with poor diets are more likely to be obese, which is associated with several chronic illnesses. Children with autism are more likely to have low calcium and protein, which can reduce brain development, bone growth, and muscle strength. These issues may be correlated with problems with cognition, balance, physical strength, and other aspects of physical development. Feeding issues can be a major problem for autistic children, and the consequences can be serious if the child ends up with nutritional deficiencies. Parents can help by employing various strategies to get their children to eat a more diverse diet. Doctors and therapists are often involved in this process. Also Check: Autism Spectrum Disorder Dsm 5 Criteria Problematic Eating Behaviours Of Autistic Women With Comorbid EdsEven though very little is evidently known about the eating behaviours of autistic women, there is evidence from the ED field that autistic women with comorbid AN and ASD have a more severe presentation at the beginning of treatment and poorer treatment outcomes . Autistic women with ASD and comorbid AN seem to view both of their conditions as deeply interlinked, which makes it difficult to profit from current treatment modalities as these do not take the autistic traits underlying their ED into account . Recently, a novel clinical pathway for autistic individuals and comorbid AN has been developed, which aims to improve evidence-based treatments offered to these patients . Most of the studies on the relationship between eating problems and ASD however have not applied comprehensive assessments including developmental analysis to determine the diagnosis of ASD. This is of great importance, as instruments like the ADOS-2 or the AQ-50 alone are not sufficient to detect ASD in patients with EDs, and whose eating problems cannot be linked or attributed to ASD this way. source https://www.autismtalkclub.com/healthy-eating-for-autistic-adults/ Via https://autismtalkclub.tumblr.com/post/697154238925684736 Can St Johns Wort Help With Adhd

For this reason, many parents have turned to alternative remedies to treat their kids. One such remedy that is used is a herbal treatment known as St. Johns wort, available from local health food stores. St. Johns wort has received attention in the past for its possible role in treating depression. Does St. Johns wort also help for ADHD? Although some, but not all, studies have shown that St. Johns wort is as effective as standard anti-depressant medications, at least from this study, it doesnt appear to be effective for treatment of ADHD. This is disappointing in light of parental concern about using prescription medications for ADHD treatment. Although St. Johns wort would have been an appealing natural alternative with its lack of significant side effects, theres no documented evidence that it works and this controlled study, although small, found no benefit. How Should I Take St John’s WortWhen considering the use of herbal supplements, seek the advice of your doctor. You may also consider consulting a practitioner who is trained in the use of herbal/health supplements. If you choose to use St. John’s wort, use it as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider. Do not use more of this product than is recommended on the label. Do not use different forms of St. John’s wort at the same time without medical advice. Using different formulations together increases the risk of an overdose. Take St. John’s wort in the morning if this product causes you to have trouble sleeping. Do not take topical St. John’s wort by mouth. Topical forms of this product are for use only on the skin. St. John’s wort may increase your risk of serious heart complications or other problems during surgery. If you need surgery, stop taking St. John’s wort at least 2 weeks ahead of time. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Exposure to light can make St. John’s wort inactive. It May Be As Effective As AntidepressantsThere is strong evidence to support the use of St. Johns wort in the treatment of depression. In 2016, an in-depth review of 35 studies examined these effects. It found that St. Johns wort (
However, there was a lack of research on its effects on severe depression. Another recent analysis looked at 27 studies comparing the effects of St. Johns wort and antidepressant medication. It showed that St. Johns wort had effects similar to those of antidepressants on mild to moderate depression. It also found fewer people stopped taking St. Johns wort during the studies, compared to antidepressants. This could be due to its fewer side effects . Furthermore, in one controlled study, 251 people who took 9001,800 mg of St. Johns wort for six weeks experienced a 56.6% decrease in their depression score, compared to a 44.8% decrease in those on antidepressants . Lastly, another controlled study in 241 people taking either St. Johns wort or an antidepressant found that 68.6% of people experienced a reduction in symptoms with St. Johns wort, compared to 70.4% of those on an antidepressant . Don’t Miss: What Do Autistic People Look Like St John’s Wort No Help For AdhdFollow @TIME A popular herbal remedy for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children actually does little to improve symptoms of the disease, according to a new study. Researchers at Bastyr University in Washington state report in the Journal of the American Medical Association that St. John’s wort, a commonly used botanical to treat depression, does not help children with ADHD to concentrate or curb hyperactivity any more than a rice-protein placebo over an eight-week period. It’s the first such study to tackle the question of St. John’s wort’s effectiveness against ADHD in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Led by Wendy Weber, a naturopathic physician at Bastyr, the group decided to study St. John’s wort after the Food and Drug Administration approved atomoxetine an agent that keeps nerve endings in the brain flooded with the neurotransmitter norepinephrine for treating ADHD in children. They knew from previous studies that at least one of St. John’s wort’s active ingredients, hyperforin, has the same effect on brain neurons, and speculated, as have other proponents of alternative therapies, that the botanical might help to relieve symptoms of ADHD without a prescription. But among the 54 children between six and 17 years old involved in the study, those receiving 900 mg of St. John’s wort daily were no better off than those not receiving the treatment when it came to controlling hyperactivity and improving mental focus. St John’s Wort Fails To Help Kids With Adhd In StudyChildren and teens with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder fared no better on St. John’s wort than they did on dummy pills in a government study, another blow for herbal supplements. St. John’s wort, pine bark extract and blue-green algae are among commonly used herbal treatments for children with ADHD. They appeal to parents who want to avoid stimulants like Ritalin and other drugs used to help children control their behavior. ADHD affects more than 4.4 million children, according to government estimates. But unlike prescription drugs, supplements are only loosely regulated by the government and their makers don’t have to prove they are safe or effective. “Do an Internet search, and you’ll find a wide variety of herbal products marketed for ADHD,” said lead author Wendy Weber of Bastyr University’s School of Naturopathic Medicine in suburban Seattle. “I’ve found there is very little research on the majority of products out there.” Weber, working with colleagues at Harvard University and the University of Washington, focused on St. John’s wort because studies in rats found it increases brain chemicals like norepinephrine, which is thought to help focus attention. Weber reasoned that St. John’s wort might work the same way as the prescription drug Strattera, approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat ADHD. Strattera makes norepinephrine more available in the brain. Don’t Miss: What Happens After A Diagnosis Of Autism How To Take St Johns WortSt. Johns wort comes in many forms, including tablets, capsules, teas, extracts and oils for the skin. The standard strength is 0.3% hypericin . But given that the FDA does not recognize it as a drug, it is not regulated as such and products can vary greatly in strength. This makes accurate dosing difficult to determine, but most studies on St. Johns wort and depression have used a dose of 300 mg three times a day . Capsules or tablets seem to allow for more accurate dosing. Buying it from a reputable source can further ensure accurate dosing.

Don’t Miss: How Do You Get Diagnosed With Autism Use In Children Vs AdultsStudies that look at how a medication works for adults can’t always be used to show how it would work in children. There are many factors that determine how a medication or supplement might affect a child, and it’s not necessarily as simple as giving them a lower dose of a drug because they are smaller than an adult. One example of this phenomenon is the use of prescription antidepressant medications in children. A potential danger of antidepressant use in people under the age of 25 is an increase in suicidal thoughts or behavior. While the side effect is uncommon, it was significant enough that the FDA put a black box warning on all prescription antidepressants. It’s unclear if natural and herbal supplements could carry the same risk. But if St. John’s wort can alter neurotransmitters in a way that’s similar to how antidepressant medications work, the question would be of valid concern for researchers, medical professionals, alternative medicine practitioners, and anyone considering using it. It’s important to remember that a diagnosis of depression alone is associated with a higher risk of suicide, regardless of treatment. If someone you love is depressed, make sure you know the warning signs of suicide. If your child is having suicidal thoughts, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 for support and assistance from a trained counselor. If you or a loved one are in immediate danger, call 911. What The Research Says About Use In ChildrenThe National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that the research on St. John’s wort has provided inconsistent results and therefore it doesn’t consider it to be an effective treatment for depression. However, there have been studies that appear to demonstrate St. John’s wort’s potential effectiveness for treating depressive symptoms in adults, both when compared to a placebo and prescription depression medications such as Zoloft . When used appropriately, St. John’s wort may be comparable to serotonin reuptake inhibitors in effectiveness and safety for treating depression in adults. However, the use of St. John’s wort for depression in children has not been well-studied. There have not been many studies specifically assessing the use of St. John’s wort in the treatment of childhood depression. A study from 2003 included boys between the ages of 6 and 16 found that of the 33 youths in the study, 25 met response criteria after taking St. John’s wort for 8 weeks and didn’t have any major side effects from taking the herb. This data is promising, but doesn’t compare St. John’s wort with placebo. Another study in 2005 found that some adolescents with mild depression might benefit from using St. John’s wort. However, the study did not look specifically at improvement of depressive systems as an outcome variable. In both studies, the researchers noted the need for additional research to support the findings, particularly with placebo-controlled trials. Works as an AntidepressantMany studies show that St. Johns wort may help fight mild to moderate depression and anxiety and has fewer side effects than most other prescription antidepressants, such as loss of sex drive. However, there are St. Johns wort drug interactions, so the herb should be taken only under the guidance of a healthcare professional, especially if you already take medications for depression. In a 2017 meta-analysis including 27 clinical trials and over 3,800 patients, researchers concluded that St. Johns wort has comparable efficacy and safety to SSRIs. Studies show that St. Johns wort uses seem to work as well as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors , a popular type of antidepressant that doctors often prescribe first to treat depression, such as Prozac, Celexa and Zoloft. Researchers arent exactly sure how St. Johns wort works for depression some have suggested that the herb acts similar to a SSRI because it makes more serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine available in the brain. These neurotransmitters help improve your mood and can be responsible for treating symptoms of depression. In studies using the rat forced swimming test, an animal model of depression, St Johns wort extracts induced a significant reduction of immobility. In other experimental models of depression, including acute and chronic forms of escape deficit induced by stressors, St Johns wort extract was shown to protect rats from the consequences of unavoidable stress. The earliest interventions for young children with autism focus on increasing engagement and interaction rather than speech. For prelinguistic infants and toddlers, interventions often focus on engagement, meaningful play, gestures and parent/caregiver/sibling interaction, Dacy said. Interventions can be part of everyday routines in the home, childcare or community, such as dressing, bathing, mealtime or playtime, Dacy said. Some of the early intervention strategies really look at play with people, Woods said. How do we engage with the people in our lives, show them attention, express our emotions? How do we engage with them and take turns as a foundation for early communication? Being animated can help parents and caregivers engage with their children. For non-verbal children, using animal noises and toys can help gain childrens attention, according to AutisMag. Recommended Reading: Does My Son Have Autism Or Adhd Are There Differences Among Adhd DrugsAlthough just a handful of compounds specifically target ADHD, numerous dosage forms exist.
Eat A Whole Foods NutrientQuality proteins, healthy fats rich in omega 3s, nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables, and minimally processed grains provide optimal fuel sources for both adults and children for healthy brain and neurotransmitter function. Neurotransmitters are messengers that send signals between neurons in your brain and body, and they influence things like focus, attention, and information processing. In a food environment where heavily processed food laden with artificial preservatives and other additives can alter health in numerous ways, eating a whole foods based diet prioritizes health and nutrient density, providing the vitamins, minerals, and quality fuel to healthy neurotransmitter production and function. A nutrient-dense diet is an important step to address ADHD without medication. Is It Adhd Or AnxietyThe answer to this question was addressed in an illuminating lecture for continuing medical education for physicians by John Waldrup, M.D. from Weill Cornell Medical College at a conference presented by the Nevada Psychiatric Association. Dr. Waldrup presented the idea that children with anxiety disorders will usually start showing symptoms by 6 to 12 years of age, while being frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated. Confusing the picture of whether or not it is anxiety or ADHD is the fact that generalized anxiety disorder and inattentive presentation of ADHD clinically show much the same symptoms of inattention, leading to frequent misdiagnosis . And although both anxiety disorders and ADHD manifest similar symptoms of inattention, there are important distinctions to be made between these two disorders, especially in regards to providing effective treatment for symptoms. To obtain a clearer picture of the differences between ADHD and anxiety, lets first look at the symptoms of each disorder. You May Like: Autism And Light Sensitivity Physical Symptoms Of Anxiety

In fact, untreated ADHD or ADD can negatively change the trajectory of a persons life and future by increasing their vulnerability to many problems that someone without ADHD would not have to face, including:
As an example, a landmark study from the Mayo Clinic published in the medical journal, Pediatrics, followed ADHD children into adulthood and confirmed that many children do not outgrow ADHD . The same study showed that these untreated children can face increased risk as adults for psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or substance dependency. In addition, untreated ADHD children are less likely to graduate high school and college, earn lower incomes, and have an increased incidence of employment problems and marital conflicts. One of the tricky aspects of treating ADHD and anxiety is that stimulants that are used to treat ADHD, such as Adderall or Ritalin, can make anxiety symptoms worse. Anxiety in and of itself is listed as a potential common side effect of Adderall. Gaur says that stimulants can also cause symptoms like jitteriness, agitation, and a racing heartbeat, which may be mistaken for anxiety. Additionally, if someone has been mistakenly diagnosed with ADHD, it is very likely that a stimulant will make their anxiety worse, Gaur says. This is why the correct diagnosis of both conditions is so important. How To Begin A Diagnosis ProcessAdults who suspect they or a loved one might be autistic can do a self-assessment test for adults. A person can find these tests online. While they cannot give a diagnosis, the tests are a good starting point. A person seeking a diagnosis can take the results of such a test to a primary care doctor who will try to determine whether ASD may be present by:
If no underlying physical condition can explain the symptoms, the doctor may refer the person to a psychiatrist or a psychologist to make an ASD diagnosis. If symptoms are not present in childhood but begin in adolescence or adulthood, this may indicate a cognitive or mental health condition other than ASD. It may be difficult to find a specialist who can diagnose ASD in adults. Individuals who would like a diagnosis for themselves or a loved one may need to do research to find a provider with experience diagnosing autistic adults. Another option is to speak to a developmental pediatrician or child psychiatrist who is willing to see adult clients. You communicate by the way you look at your child, by the tone of your voice, your body language and possibly the way you touch your child.
