Autism and maths example: multiply -7 × 6I recently asked a student to multiply -7 × 6. He told me the answer was -1. His confusion was that there was a minus sign in the question and he did not know what to do with it. However, he knew that he needed to do something, so he did what was familiar to him and instead answered the question -7 + 6, arriving at the answer -1. So, why was this? It was because he had only remembered what to do with adding and subtracting negative numbers, but multiplying and dividing with negative numbers was not familiar to him. While students might recognise several aspects of maths within the question, they may not know what to do with them. Autism and maths example: multiply 15 × ½I asked another student to multiply 15 × ½. The first thing he said was that he had to find a common denominator. He saw the ½ and remembered something about common denominators. He could not access the question itself. The hypothesis proposed by these authors was that stimulants might decrease sleep arousal threshold allowing children to awaken and exert continence control. Ferrara also found nocturnal enuresis was adequately treated in six out of nine children with concurrent ADHD and nocturnal enuresis once methylphenidate was started or the dosage was increased. Bahali reported a case of a 7-year-old girl where nocturnal enuresis resolved with stimulant treatment though atomoxetine, a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, prescribed to help moderate her ADHD symptoms. In slightly contrary findings, Ferrara et al. reported that nine children with ADHD and nocturnal enuresis responded well to increasing doses of methylphenidate alone to treat both disorders, while desmopressin was not effective in treating those children who were not medically treated for ADHD. Desipramine has been shown to have some effectivity in both overactive bladder and in ADHD treatment . Imipramine has been used as a third-line therapy for nocturnal enuresis for some time. A study by Gepertz found 64.6% of children with nocturnal enuresis refractory to other treatments responded well to imipramine and seven children that had concurrent ADHD had a good behavioural response, as well. Imipramine was found to be effective in resolving risperidone-induced nocturnal enuresis in one study . In summary, there is large-volume good-quality evidence, including a Cochrane review for the use of TCA in managing nocturnal enuresis, and it is already a recommended third-line treatment. Follow A Behavior PlanBecause each child with autism is unique, they need a customized behavior plan. This document is part of the childs Individualized Education Plan and outlines the childs needs and includes specific steps that improve maladaptive behaviors without punishing the child. A behavior plan starts with a Functional Behavioral Analysis . This analysis identifies the root of behaviors, which can include the childs desire to obtain an object, activity, or sensation, escape a demand or undesirable situation, or gain attention. The FBA will describe the frequency and intensity of behaviors, identify the causes and consequences of behaviors, and suggest possible solutions. With information from an FBA, a special education or behavior consultant writes a Behavior Intervention Plan . This document lists the challenging behaviors, their causes, and effective solutions that are specific to the childs needs. The BIP includes measurable goals that the teacher and other staff can monitor. The BIP can be modified as the student achieves goals.
